Botulinum toxin (Botox®)

Most of the facial lines and wrinkles are caused by the contraction of the underlying muscles of the facial expression.

These dynamic wrinkles can only been seen when you smile, frown or when you are angry. With some patients, however as the skin becomes progressively creased, these lines often appear and stay, even at rest. Those patients will look older than they really are.

This will give them an angry look or worried facial expression. For those cases, Botox is the good solution.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox (botulinum toxin A) is a liquid protein that works to relax the contraction of muscles. (hyperactivity) In 1980, this substance has been successfully used to treat uncontrollable blinking or blepharospasm. Facial lines and wrinkles can be caused by muscular hyperactivity. Think of e.g. frown lines, crow's feet, foreheads wrinkles. Botox acts on the contraction of muscles by blocking the nerve impulses so that the facial lines and wrinkles can relax and soften.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A small quantity of the protein is injected into the muscle of the zone to treat (frown lines, crow's feet). These injections are completely innocuous and painless. Botox procedures do not require anaesthesia and after the treatment, you can immediately return to your daily routine.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Your skin will be smoother and your face will look rested, wrinkles and fine expression lines lose their depth and fade, which will give you a more youthful effect. Results can be noticed from the 3rd and 5th day after the injection and the treatment will last between 3 to 6 months. After this period, it is possible to renew the treatment and the next treatments may be spread out. The intensity and the end result depends from one person to another.

SIDE EFFECTS

Botox has been used safely for many years by many qualified medical practitioners, without side effects. However, there are a number of things that you should know:

You can notice some bruising or swelling, which goes away rapidly in 2-3 days

In rare cases the upper eyelid can droop or fall (ptosis), but it never lasts and goes away in 1-2 weeks, depending on the injection technique

Botox can't be used during pregnancy

You can resume normal daily activities, however you should avoid:

Do not rub or irritate the injection sites
